Looking back on Hymns for the Living Church
This is a list of things that were in Hymns for the Living Church (Hope Pub. Co., 1974), which was the pew hymnal when I arrived at Fremont Baptist in 1990. At some point in the decade that followed, it was supplanted by Word's Hymnal for Worship and Celebration (1986), which is still our pew hymnal today. I just ran across a copy (today is October 24, 2022) and since I'm under CoViD lockdown at home while my symptoms subside, I decided to look at it and see
- What I Really Miss that's not in the current book.
(The one item I've repeatedly felt the lack of ever since the switch is "Though the angry surges roll (My Anchor Holds)".)- What I Have No Recollection Of (but think might be worth a look-sing).
- What (if anything) I'm actually glad not to be subject to any longer.
Texts I wish our hymnal had:
- Almighty Father, Strong to Save I think this was probably on the docket regularly for the Sunday nearest Veterans Day, because I became quite familiar with it, moreso I think than I was at the time with the "Navy Hymn" (Eternal Father, Strong to Save) of which it is an all-media parody. I think it is a good idea for a full-strength hymnal to have both the maritime and the wheresoe'er versions; as far as I know, the Episcopal Hymnal 1982 is the only one out there that actually does this.
Tunes I wish our hymnal had:- GWALCHMAI I get kind of tired of EASTER HYMN at Easter and LLANFAIR then and always. I think I like GWALCHMAI even more than LAUS SEMPITERNA (Reay)
- LAND OF REST
- AMSTERDAM Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above is its signature pairing, and I wouldn't at all mind singing it in church
- LAUDA ANIMA (Goss)
- ROYAL OAK
- FOREST GREEN
- KING'S WESTON
Texts and/or tunes I'm not familiar with that might be worth a look-sing:- Father of Heaven, Whose Love Profound never heard of it! QUEBEC has never been a tune I particularly glommed onto, either. I wonder if its most common pairing, RIVAULX (Dykes) would appeal to me more.
- Holy Father, great Creator don't recall this one, either, but I like it; might try it to some other tune, maybe BRYN CALFARIA?
- Glory be to God the Father Now, this is the text that REGENT SQUARE was actually composed for, and I might re-pair them; if not, I still think I'd be disinclined to go with FREUEN WIR UNS ALLE; maybe WORCESTER (Whinfield) would work better.
- O Splendor of God's Glory Bright I don't know if I've ever sung this in worship, and WINCHESTER NEW is another of those stalwart tunes that for some reason don't excite my spiritual fervor, like QUEBEC above, or STUTTGART, or WINCHESTER OLD for that matter...
- Let all the world in every corner sing set here to McCutchan's ALL THE WORLD, but I don't care, I'd just like to actually sing it, be it to Routley's tune or the SDA one or whatever.
