Alphabetical Core Hymn List: A

Here is a list of the hymns beginning with A (according to Hymnary.org, which occasionally has a counterintuitive twist on things) that appear in all five of the core set of hymnals:

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing	EIN FESTE BURG (Isometric) (Discussion thread on text and tune at Facebook)
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide	EVENTIDE
Alas! And did my Savior bleed	MARTYRDOM (MARTYRDOM, HUDSON etc. @ FB)
All creatures of our God and King	LASST UNS ERFREUEN
All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name!	CORONATION
All people that on earth do dwell	OLD 100TH (Original)
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound	NEW BRITAIN
Angels from the realms of glory	REGENT SQUARE
Angels we have heard on high	GLORIA
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed	MUELLER

Unless there are strong arguments—so strong that they convince me—for excluding one or more of these, they will all go into the final contents of the Hymn Sing hymnal. I can see how five of these texts might actually appear more than once, with different tunes or arrangements, and/or with a refrain added. For the specifics, see the next list.

Here is a list of the hymns (beginning with A) in the five core hymnals that in my considered but not finally dictated opinion ought to be included in the final songlist of the Hymn Sing hymnal:

My first run-through of the texts beginning with A in the five-hymnal base yields 47 FIRST LINES I'm inclined to want in the hymn sing hymnal. In the following list, the numbers before each first line entry indicate how many of the 5 base hymnals it's in; if there are two or three numbers, that indicates how many of the hymnals contain each of the two or three tunes it's set to; where a "first line" (i.e. hymn text) is only in one of the five, the letter after the number specifies which: C = Christian Life Hymnal; H = Hymnal for Worship & Celebration; L = Lutheran Book of Worship; P = Presbyterian Hymnal; U = United Methodist Hymnal.
