A Day
Words by Mary Cole Wellpott, 1943, alt. Leland B. Ross, 2025 Tune: TEMPUS ADEST FLORIDUM, 14th century (?)
1 Once again the morning sun
Touches earth with glory;
Birds now sing their happy song
Telling spring's sweet story.
Violets dot the meadows green;
Leaves so small and tender
Change the waiting branches now
Into trees of splendor.
2. Noonday sun now high and bright
Finds the woods so cool,
Creeps into each hidden place,
Shines on forest pool.
Deer come down to drink their fill,
One to watch and listen,
But the quiet woods are still,
And the waters glisten.
3. Evening holds her candles high
In the deep blue heaven:
God looks on the earth content
With the day just given.
Let us thank Him for His care,
Sing our grateful praises
For the loveliness we share
Evermore amazes.
